the first phase of JioPhone pre-bookings were opened last month and the company recorded a massive 6 million orders for the VoLTE enabled feature phone. Users need to register on the JioPhone website to be able to pre-book the device.
The JioPhone is effectively free, however, a refundable
security deposit of Rs 1,500 will be charged for the same. Customers
need to pay Rs 500 at the time of pre-booking the JioPhone and Rs 1,000
at the time of delivery.
As per JioPhone’s terms and conditions, users will need perform a minimum mandatory recharge of Rs 4,500
over a period of three years to be able to use the device uninterrupted
and to get back the refundable security deposit after a lock-in period
of 36 months. Reliance Jio is said to be subsidising approximately 40 percent of the cost of the JioPhone, whic is essentially worth Rs 2,500.
The JioPhone runs
on an operating system known as Kai OS. It will come in two variants as
far as processors are concerned. If you buy a JioPhone, you will either
get a unit with a Spreadtrum 9820A processor or a Qualcomm 205 chipset
with a 1.2GHz Dual Core CPU. The JioPhone sports a 2.4-inch display.
That is approximately 2 full-sized SD cards put together. It is a QVGA
display with a 320p x 240p resolution. Here, it is important to
understand that while the native video player on the JioPhone supports
720p video playback thanks to the SoCs powering the device, users will
not experience the same while watching videos on the JioPhone.
